UCONN'S CLAXTON COMPETES AT IAAF WORLD U20 CHAMPIONSHIPS
TAMPERE, Finland – UConn rising sophomore Daniel Claxton (Long Island, N.Y.) competed in the high jump at the 2018 IAAF World U20 Championships being held in Tampere, Finland at Ratina Stadium.
The qualifying round of the high jump was held on Thursday afternoon with the top-12 finishers moving on to the finals. Claxton finished 19th overall in the qualifying round, finished the day with a height of 2.05 meters. Claxton cleared the first two heights set at 2.00 meters and 2.05 meters but came up short in his three tries at 2.09 meters.
Claxton qualified for the IAAF World Junior meet thanks to his second place finish at the USATF Junior Outdoor Championships in Bloomington, Indiana last month. He took second place in the event with a height of 2.13 meters (6’11.75”). Claxton represented the United States in the event along with JuVaughn Blake who took the top-spot at the U.S. championship meet.
During his rookie season in Storrs, Claxton ended the spring season claiming gold at the 2018 American Athletic Championship, clearing the bar at 2.16 meters, his best jump of the season. During the indoor campaign, Claxton also got to the medal podium in the high jump at the AAC Championship meet, finishing third (2.06 meters) and at the IC4A Championships where he was second (2.10 meters).
