The Sacred Heart University women's basketball team played its first game of its 2018 trip to Argentina, taking on the Argentina National Team at CENARD. The Pioneers fell 70-58 in the contest. Argentina is in preparation for the 2018 FIBA World Cup, entering the tournament ranked 15thin the world.
The Pioneers rallied in the second-half, closing to within five points, 58-53, early in the fourth quarter. SHU would finish with an advantage in the second-half, outscoring their hosts 34-26 after the intermission.
"We were challenged in the first-half by different international rules and a physical style of play that is not what we have come to expect," said head coach Jessica Mannetti. "We shifted our mindset and played our game in the second half and were able to make a comeback against a very, very good national team, that is a level of competition we have not faced before. We are excited to play them again tomorrow, because now we know what to expect."
Adrianne Hagood led the Pioneers in scoring, tallying 20 points, including a pair of three pointers and 10 points at the free throw line. Erin Storck knocked down a pair from behind the arc as well, finishing with eight points, the same total as Candice Leatherwood. SHU received points from 10 different players in the contest.
SHU and Argentina will meet again on Wednesday, at 6pm.
