Kovarik Scores First Collegiate Goal as Women's Soccer Picks Up First Win of 2018 Campaign
HAVERFORD, Pa. – The St. John Fisher College women's soccer team earned its first victory of the 2018 campaign over the Haverford College Fords in the consolation game of the Haverford Kickoff with a final score of 1-0. With the win, the Cardinals jump to an even 1-1-0 after their first tournament of the season, while the Fords drop to 0-2-0 thus far.
The Fisher defense staved off a threatening Haverford offense as the Fords got off five shots in the first 20 minutes of play.
Fisher had its best chance to find the back of the net just ten seconds before the end of the first half as sophomore Logan Chase ripped the Cardinals' lone shot of the half just high of the goal.
Senior goalkeeper Melissa McGowan totaled three saves to keep the Cardinals and Fords drawn at zero as the teams headed to the locker room.
The Cardinals would come out firing in the second half, rocketing three shots before Carli Kovarik found the back of the net to put Fisher up a single goal. A long pass was sent through the defense, before the Liverpool native beat a second defender, eventually sending the ball sailing past the Haverford keeper.
The lone goal would be enough for the Cardinals to get the win as the defense stayed strong through the rest of regulation, despite the Fords' 23 total shots.
Kovarik closed out her strong day taking four of Fisher's seven total shots. Chase, Shiane Irwin and Elise Olivo were also credited with a single shot attempt each in the contest.
McGowan earned her first win of her senior campaign in net after totaling eight total saves in the victory.
Fisher returns to action in front of its home fans at 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 6th against The College at Brockport Golden Eagles.
