GAME #2 FOOTBALL PREVIEW: Bears Host Union

THE SERIES: Union leads 19-4.

LAST YEAR: Junior quarterback Nick Cascione threw for 166 yards and a pair of touchdowns while running for another and senior Connor Kinzelmann ran for 136 yards leading Union to a 28-13 non-conference over Coast Guard in the first meeting between the two teams since 2005.

Cascione was 18 of 25 for 166 yards with two touchdowns and one interception while rushing for 22 yards and a score.

Union finished with 356 yards (189 rushing) while the Bears had 328 total yards. Coast Guard was held to negative four yards rushing on 18 carries as junior quarterback Ethan Goldcamp was sacked four times. Goldcamp was 32 of 57 for 332 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.

Freshman Justin Moffatt led Coast Guard with career-highs of nine receptions and 91 yards while junior Chip Crowley had five receptions for 83 yards and senior Cody Bain had five catches for 63 yards for the Bears.

Goldcamp threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Moffatt with 51 seconds left capping a 10-play, 86 yard drive, the extra point missed to close the scoring. Chip Crowley recovered an onsides kick at the Union 45 with 50 seconds left, but the Bears did not score.

Jake Behne led Coast Guard with nine tackles and the only interception.

LAST WEEK: Junior quarterback Ryan Jones had 411 yards of total offense and threw for a career-high 336 yards and two scores while rushing for 75 yards and a touchdown leading Coast Guard to a 33-7 win over the University of New England in the season opener.

It was the first game in program history for the Nor'Easters.

Coast Guard finished with 512 yards of total offense, 339 passing and 173 rushing yards.

Jones was 23 of 39 for 336 yards with two touchdowns and one interception and he carried 16 times for 75 yards and a score to earn his first collegiate win.

Sophomore Justin Moffatt tied a career-high with nine receptions for a career best 157 yards to lead the Bears.

Sophomore Jon Wagner had 95 yards of total offense for Coast Guard as he carried seven times for 44 yards and had five receptions for 51 yards.

Junior Patrick Crowley led the Coast Guard defense with eight tackles while sophomore Colby Coco had an interception that he returned 22 yards for the Bears. Sophomore Andre Horner recovered a fumble for the Bears, who won the season opener for the fourth straight season.

For the first time since 2009, Union opened its season with a win, as the Dutchmen defeated Husson University, 30-7 at home. Husson beat Union 20-7 last season and competed in the NCAA playoffs in each of the last two seasons.

Sophomore quarterback Will Bellamy threw for 370 yards and three touchdowns, with no interceptions. Griffin Beal and Andre Ross Jr., both had over 100 yards receiving on the day, with Beal catching two TD passes, and Ross Jr., catching one.

Union's defense limited Husson to just 237 yards of offense. George Reed led the Dutchmen with 10 tackles.

Minus Husson's opening possession, the Eagles only had two possession all game that crossed midfield.

COACH GEORGE IS BEARS WINS LEADER: Coast Guard head coach Bill George, in his 20th season, has a record 64 career wins as head coach at the Academy as he passed John Merriman for the most in program history in the win over Maine Maritime on Oct. 19th, 2013.

Merriman was the coach from (1930-1945) and the Gymnasium is named is his honor. In 2012, George passed NFL Hall of Famer and former Director of Athletics and head football coach Otto Graham, who had 43 wins in his two stints as head coach (1959-'65 and 1974-'75). Coach George led the Bears to a pair of NEFC Bogan Division championships in 2006 and 2007.

BEARS PICKED SIXTH IN NEWMAC PRESEASON POLL: Coast Guard has been picked to finish sixth in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) preseason poll. Coast Guard was 3-7 overall and 1-6 in conference play. Every conference school has voted for defending champion Springfield to repeat as NEWMAC champion getting a first place vote from all seven schools, while the Pride, which can't vote for itself, voted for WPI.

THE MEN BEHIND THE MICROPHONES: Coast Guard football will have a new broadcast team this year for the five home webcasts as Keith O'Brien (The Sports Doctor) will handle play-by-play duties while Dan Zumpano will be the color commentator for the 2018 season. O'Brien, who did several road football and some home basketball games last season for the Bears, takes over the the play-by-play duties while Zampano, a newcomer to Coast Guard football joins him in the booth.
