Brown, Zouzoua, Alves Sweep NEFC Player of the Week Awards

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., September 11, 2018 – Following a 17-14 comeback victory at Nassau Community College on Saturday, quarterback Jalen Brown, defensive lineman Niadre Zouzoua and kicker/punter Diogo Alves Dos Santos Pereira of the No. 19-ranked Monroe College football team swept the Northeast Football Conference (NEFC) Player of the Week awards, as announced by the NEFC on Tuesday. Brown repeats as NEFC Offensive Player of the Week after another strong game under center. He completed 11-of-21 passes for 91 yards with a touchdown. Brown also rushed 11 times for 89 yards, including a game-tying 61-yard touchdown rush in the fourth quarter. Zouzoua picks up his first NEFC Defensive Player of the Week award after proving himself a force to be reckoned with on the defensive front. He finished Saturday's game with four tackles, two sacks, 2.5 tackles for loss and a forced fumble. Alves came up clutch in Saturday's win, and also helped the Mustangs win the field-position battle, earning him the NEFC Special Teams Player of the Week award. The former soccer player made two crucial extra points in Saturday's comeback victory over Nassau Community College, but his biggest moment came from 42 yards out with just over four minutes remaining. Having just tied the game, the Mustangs moved into field goal range late in the fourth quarter. Alves lined up for a 42-yard field goal, and sent it right through the uprights with plenty of distance to spare, eventually clinching the 17-14 win for Monroe. In addition, Alves averaged 44.2 yards per punt on six punts, with one landing inside the 20-yard line and two netting 50-or-more yards, including a long of 60 yards. He also averaged 63.0 yards per kickoff, including two touchbacks. The Mustangs get back to work on Saturday, Sept. 15, when they visit a tough Louisburg College team in Louisburg, N.C. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
