Football Falls in Home Opener

Bronx, N.Y. - According to Tlingit Indian legend, a Seawolf is a mythical creature that brings good luck to anyone fortunate enough to ever see it. Such was not the case for the Fordham football squad tonight who saw the Stony Brook University Seawolves but didn't seem to have any luck as the Rams fell, 28-6, in Fordham's home opener on Jack Coffey Field. With the loss, Fordham falls to 0-3 on the season while Stony Brook, who entered the game ranked 21st in the NCAA Coaches poll and 24th in the STATS FCS poll, improves to 2-1. Fordham couldn't mount a rushing attack, being held to negative rushing yards, while the Seawolves proved that they aren't limited to moving in the water, gaining 311 rushing yards and scoring twice on the ground. The Rams had some success through the air as senior Austin Longi grabbed six passes for 100 yards and senior Isaiah Searight had five catches for 40 yards. Stony Brook didn't take long to get on the scoreboard, picking off a Luke Medlock pass and returning it 25 yards for a score just 1:22 into the game. The Seawolves scored twice in a 29 second span early in the second quarter, taking advantage of a Fordham fumble on the kickoff after the first score, to take a 21-0 lead at the break. A 75-yard run on the first play of the second half gave Stony Brook a 28-0 lead before senior Corey Caddle hauled in a 29-yard scoring strike from freshman Tim DeMorat with 2:14 remaining for the Fordham score.
