No. 1 Monroe Men’s Soccer Shuts out SUNY Ulster for First Region XV Win of 2018
STONE RIDGE, N.Y., September 22, 2018 – The No. 1-ranked Monroe College Mustangs men's soccer team blanked Region XV foe SUNY Ulster on Saturday by a score of 8-0. The Mustangs improve to 6-0 on the season and move to 1-0 in Region XV play, while SUNY Ulster falls to 3-3 and 0-1. The sophomores got things going early on in the contest, with Lucas Nishioka scoring in the 14th minute to make it a 1-0 game. George Asomani followed at the 16:34 mark off an assist from Nishioka, giving Monroe an early 2-0 lead. Tobias Pellio made it 3-0 at the 29:35 mark off a feed from Othman Gherab. The Mustangs held their 3-0 lead through the halftime buzzer. Caio Guazzelli got things going again in the second half, scoring at the 55:40 mark to make it a 4-0 game. Cameron Joice scored off an assist from Ronaldo Da Silva just five minutes later to push the lead to five. Luca Erhardt netted another off an assist from Pellio at the 64:56 mark to make it 6-0, and then Da Silva scored off a pass from Gherab just 59 seconds later to push the game to 7-0. Guazzelli capped things off with his second of the day at the 70:25 mark, giving the Mustangs an eight-goal advantage. Victor Camps picked up the win to improve to 5-0 on the season after a clean first half. Chris Kaev took over in the second half and kept Ulster off the board. Guazzelli was the only Mustang to score twice on Saturday, while six others added one apiece. Gherab handed out two assists, while Nishioka, Pellio and Da Silva each had three-point days with a goal and an assist apiece. The Mustangs held possession for nearly the entire game, outshooting their hosts by an impressive 50-0 margin. Monroe also earned all 15 of the game's corner-kick opportunities. Monroe is finally set for its home opener, which takes place on Saturday, Sept. 29, at Skidelsky Field at Flowers Park in New Rochelle. Monroe hosts Bunker Hill Community College on Saturday, with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
