Cortland Races Out Early in 51-14 Win vs. Morrisville St.


CORTLAND, N.Y. - Brett Segala (Webster/Webster Schroeder) completed 27-of-33 passes for 340 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions and ran for 56 yards and a score as Cortland cruised past visiting Morrisville State, 51-14, in an Empire 8 contest. The Red Dragons improved to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in league play with the victory. Jake Smith (Albany/Guilderland) caught eight passes for 147 yards and a touchdown and Nick Anderson (Saratoga Springs) finished with five receptions for 46 yards and a score. Angelo Foster (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy) and Alex Wasserman (Closter, NJ/Northern Valley Demarest) also caught TD passes for the Red Dragons, who finished with a 524-320 advantage in total offense, including a 347-175 margin through the air. Kyle Richard (Lakeview/Malverne) returned an interception 58 yards for a second-quarter score and finished with five tackles. Mark DeLuise (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) led Cortland with 11 tackles, followed by Isaac Hicks III (Staten Island/Curtis) with eight. Nick Mongelli (Marlboro) made a 39-yard field goal late in the second quarter and is 5-for-5 on field goal attempts this fall. Tyrell Plaza (Richmond Hill/Bayside) closed the scoring for Cortland with a 9-yard TD run with less than four minutes remaining. Johnny Vigliotti completed 15-of-28 passes for 152 yards and a TD for Morrisville (2-3, 0-2 Empire 8) after replacing injured Brandon Gwinner late in the first quarter. Raffaele Bradshaw caught seven passes for 66 yards and Nick Edmond rushed 15 times for 48 yards. Mike Bodnar made a team-high nine tackles, seven solo, and Jose Garcia registered seven tackles and a fumble recovery for the Mustangs. Cortland led 30-0 at halftime and 37-0 until late in the third quarter. Smith caught a 58-yard TD pass from Segala on Cortland's first possession, and Wasserman's 10-yard TD catch later in the quarter pushed the lead to 13-0 (the PAT attempt failed after a bad snap). Richard's pick-six just over five minutes into the second quarter and Foster's 33-yard TD catch with 1:47 left before halftime made it a 27-0 game. The Red Dragons then got the ball back when D'monte Woody (Freeport) forced a fumble that Vincenzo Pagliaroli (Sparkill/Tappan Zee) recovered at the Morrisville 48-yard line with 31 seconds left. Segala completed a 6-yard pass to Anderson and a 19-yard pass to Smith to set up Mongelli's 39-yard field goal. Anderson's 7-yard TD catch with 4:28 left in the third extended the lead to 37-0. Morrisville got on the board when Vigliotti hit Toure Hall Jr. on a 5-yard TD pass with 29 seconds left in the quarter. Cortland outscored the Mustangs 14-7 in the fourth, with a Segala 4-yard TD run and Plaza's 9-yard score sandwiched around a Ky'ere Tillery 3-yard TD run for the Mustangs. Cortland will host Buffalo State next Saturday at noon.
