Women’s Tennis Beats Marist, 6-1
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The LIU Brooklyn women's tennis team opened their dual match schedule with a win Sunday afternoon, beating Marist on the road, 6-1. The Blackbirds won the doubles point and five of the six singles matches to start their year 1-0. In doubles, the duo of Malin Leysen and Jennifer Gogovastarted the match with a dominant win in the No. 3 spot. There, the Blackbirds beat Madison Price and Sophia Chavarria, 6-1, to give LIU an early advantage. The Blackbirds would clinch the doubles point with a win at No. 1, where Anna Grigoryan and Ana Leonte beat their Marist opponents, 7-5. In the No. 2 doubles spot, junior Jessica Brzozowska and Sasha Bollweg had the team's only loss, falling to Sophia Moeller and Jada Tijani, 6-4. In singles action, the Blackbirds had several straight set wins to clinch the team match early on. Grigoryan was the first to earn a point, when she beat Julia Gabay in the No. 1 spot, 6-3, 6-2. Senior Clemence Krug also cruised to a win, as she beat Chavarria, 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 5 singles spot. And junior Jennifer Gogova clinched the team's win with her straight set victory in the No. 4 spot. She beat Galu, 7-6 (3), 6-1. The Blackbirds also had two singles comeback wins, in the Nos. 3 and 6 spots, as both spots saw LIU battle back from a first set defeat. At No. 6, Leonte dropped the first set to Tijani, 6-3, but rallied back to win the next two sets, 6-3, 6-2, to take the win. And at No. 3, Leysen dropped her first set, 6-3, before coming back to tie it up with a 6-3 win, and take the third set tiebreaker, 10-6. Brzozowska had the only loss of the day, as she fell to Price in the No. 2 spot, 7-5, 6-3. Up next, the Blackbirds prepare to take on the best in the Northeast, as they head to New Haven, Conn., to take part in the ITA Northeast Regional tournament, beginning October 11.
