Montclair, NJ – Sophomore forward CHAZ BURNETTscored a pair of goals as No. 7 and top-seeded Montclair State held off fourth-seeded Rowan University 4-3 in the semifinals of the NJAC Men's Soccer Championship on Tuesday evening at MSU Soccer Park.
RAFAEL TERCI and JAKE SEAMAN each had a goal as the Red Hawks (15-1-2) advance into the championship game at home on Friday, November second against second-seeded Ramapo College at 7pm. The Roadrunners (15-2-2) slipped past sixth-seeded William Paterson 2-1 on a penalty kick goal with 57 seconds remaining in regulation.
Ryan Campbell had two goals for Rowan (12-7) which fell to Montclair State for the second time this season and the third straight time in the NJAC Tournament.
Terci gave the Red Hawks a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute knocking in a pass from freshman ANTHONY PELAEZ for his 10th of the season. Campbell tied the score just over 10 minutes later converting a penalty kick however went back on top 46 seconds later on a penalty kick made of its own as Burnett drilled home his 11th of the season.
Montclair State carried the 2-1 lead into halftime and then extended it to three goals scoring twice in a span of 4:16. Seaman got the first at 50:09 with a low shot off a rebound before JOSE HUERTA set up Burnett for his second making the score 4-1 with 35:35 left in the second half.
Rowan didn't go away quietly. In fact, the Profs mounted a rally in the final 10-plus minutes. Shane Doherty halved the lead to 4-2 as he touched in a feed from Kevin Pereira with 10:08 to play. The Profs drew closer five minutes later as Campbell netted his second with 5:53 left.
The Profs got one last chance with 59 ticks to go as Pereira sent a shot on goal that was stopped by MIKE SAALFRANKpreserving the win for the Red Hawks.
Saalfrank finished with six saves for MSU while Kyle Dennis stopped eight for Rowan, which outshot the Red Hawks 20-19 and held a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks.
