DISTRICT CHAMPS! Kang’s Late Score Lifts No. 9 Monroe Men’s Soccer over Massasoit for Northeast Dist

BROCKTON, Mass., November 4, 2018 – An 85th minute goal by Yoojun Kang broke a 2-2 tie, lifting the No. 9-ranked Monroe College Mustangs men's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Massasoit Community College on Sunday, earning the Mustangs the 2018 Northeast District Championship crowd at Warrior Soccer Field. The Mustangs return to the NJCAA Div. I Men's Soccer National Championship Tournament for the third straight season. With the game knotted up at 2-2 and overtime looking like a strong possibility, Kang could not have picked a better time for his first goal of the 2018 season. He scored at the 84:28 mark, putting the Mustangs up for good. The Mustangs got on the board first in Sunday's matchup when Cameron Joice netted his fifth of the season at the 21:01 mark to make it an early 1-0 lead for the Mustangs. That lead did not last for long, as Massasoit's Junior Pereira tied things up with a goal at the 26:16 mark. The game went to the half with a 1-1 stalemate. Things went south in the 65th minute, as the Warriors took the lead when Maldini Da Fonseca scored off an assist from Pereira to make it a 2-1 score in favor of the home team. The Mustangs did not waste any time turning things around, tying it up at the 66:19 mark on a goal by Roque Viegas that was assisted by Javier Rodriguez, reaching a 2-2 draw with just under 34 minutes left in regulation. Despite the tight score, the Mustangs significantly outshot their hosts, 26-8, including a 10-5 edge in shots on goal. Monroe also doubled up Massasoit in corner kicks, 10-5. The Mustangs head to the NJCAA Div. I Men's Soccer Championship for the third straight season with the automatic bid they earned as Northeast District Champions. This year's tournament will be hosted by Daytona State College in Daytona, Fla., from Nov. 12-17. Matchups and schedules will be announced during this upcoming week.
