MTRK: Hofstra's Alex Masai Qualifies For The NCAA Outdoor Championships


Hempstead, NY – Hofstra University junior track star Alex Masai has qualified for the 10,000-meter run and will compete in the 2019 NCAA Division I Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships – East Preliminary next week, the NCAA announced Thursday. The NCAA Division I Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships – East Preliminary will be hosted by the University of North Florida and the Jacksonville (FL) Sports Council from Thursday, May 23 through Saturday, May 25. California State University, Sacramento in Sacramento, California will host the West Preliminary. The qualifiers out of these two regions will compete in the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships held June 5-8 in Austin, Texas. Masai, a native of Eldoret, Kenya, broke the Hofstra school record in the 10000-meter run at the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic on Saturday, April 13 with a fourth-place finish in 29:39.36. Masai's time topped Meshack Kipchirchir's fifth-place time of 30:07.12 in the 10000-meter run invite that was set at the 2018 Penn Relays. Masai's time is also the best time in the Colonial Athletic Association this year. It is also the 38th-best time in the east this season. Masai won the 8K 2018 CAA Men's Cross Country Championship in October in a school-record time of 24:00.70 to become the first Hofstra cross country conference champion.
