FAIRFIELD, Conn. - USA Basketball Training Camp for the 2019 Pan American Games has selected Sacred Heart University's Jare'l Spellman for participation.
"It is a great opportunity for Jare'l to compete against some of the best players in the country. It will be great for his development as a player, for his confidence and for his professional aspirations," head coach Anthony Latina said. "Jare'l is a great representative of our program and hopefully his performance will open doors for other players of ours for the future."
The Pan Am Games, held in Lima, Peru, will have the US team facing Puerto Rico, Venezuela, and the Dominican Republic before entering the playoff stage.
USA East Coast, serving as the Select Team for Training Camp, will have all Division I players, including Notre Dame's leading scorer John Mooney and Syracuse's top returner Buddy Boeheim and will be coached by long-time NBA assistant coach Mike Longabardi.
Spellman led SHU to a 15-17 mark and an 11-7 record in Northeast Conference-play. Spellman was named the 2018-19 NEC Defensive Player of the Year after leading the conference and finishing fourth in the nation with 96 total blocks. Spellman also averaged three blocks per game, which ranked fifth in the nation last season.
Activities run July 20-24 with five training sessions, a team photo shoot, and an exhibition game against the 2019 Pan Am squad open to the public. Providence College will host the scrimmage for the USA Team on Wednesday, July 24th at 6:00p.m. in preparation for the Pan American Games competition. The scrimmage will take place in Alumni Hall.
