Vassar Women Post 5-2 Mark At VC Invite

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Vassar women's fencing team posted a 5-2 record at the annual Vassar Invitational held at Walker Field House on Sunday. In seven rounds, the Brewers picked up wins against LIU, Wagner, Haverford, Lafayette, Denison, and FDU. Sophomore Zoe Tolbert (Olympia, WA) went undefeated on the day at 17-0 in foil. Vassar 17, Haverford, 10 Lead by a 7-2 epee, the Brewers opened the day with a 17-10 victory over Haverford. Vassar also went 6-3 in foil, but were tripped up 4-5 in sabre. Sophomore Rosie Parker (Portland, OR) started with a 3-0 mark in epee, while Shannon Chen (Westford, MA) and Chloe Chinnadurai (Denville, NJ) tallied 2-1 marks. Tolbert led the foil squad at 3-0 and classmate Tori Lubin (Westport, CT) added two victories. Vassar 11, Lafayette 16 The Brewers had a tough matchup against Lafayette in the second round. Vassar won the foil 9-0 due to a forfeit, but were downed 1-8 in both the sabre and epee field. Vassar 21, LIU 6 Vassar rebounded with a strong 21-6 victory against LIU in the third round. Sabre went 8-1 with Nicoletta Dinelli (Talent, OR) and freshman Elise Poniatowski (West Roxbury, MA) both went 2-0. At foil, Tolbert and Lubin recorded 3-0 sweeps, while freshman Jenna Wailbel (Pompton Lakes, NJ) was 2-1. Chen, Chinnadurai, and Parker tacked on 2-1 marks in epee. Vassar 13, Drew 14 The Rangers used an 8-1 sabre victory to hold off Vassar for the 14-13 victory. The Brewers went 6-3 in foil behind a 3-0 performance from Tolbert. Parker also was 3-0 epee. Vassar 14, Wagner 13 Vassar flipped the script of the previous round, winning 14-13 over Wagner. A 7-2 foil mark led the Brewers, while epee slipped by with a 5-4 decision. Tolbert recorded her third straight foil 3-0 sweep and Waibel and Lubin tacked on two wins each. Epee was tied 4-4 until Chinnadurai closed out the final match with a 5-4 victory which led to the Vassar victory. Vassar 20, FDU 7 Tolbert kept her winning streak alive against, going 2-0 against the Knights. Lubin also was two as foil won 7-2. Vassar took sabre 9-0 against the solo FDU fencer, while epee fell 4-5. Vassar 18, Denison 9 The Brewers closed the day with an 18-9 victory against Denison. Vassar swept foil at 9-0 with Tolbert, Lubin, and freshman Rose Lynch (Garden City, NY) all going 3-0. Sabre won 5-4 behind a 3-0 performance from Dinelli. Poniatowski went 2-1. The epee squad was defeated 4-5, but Chinnadurai managed to go 3-0. The Brewers return to action next weekend to host the Matt Lampell Hudson River Invitational at Walker Field House on Sun. Nov. 17.
