Kimutai and Coach Greene Collect USTFCCCA Atlantic Region Awards

EVELLAND, Texas, June 2, 2021 – Part of the NJCAA Track & Field Championship week each year and season is the awards banquet prior to competition. During this year's banquet, Enock Kimutai of the Monroe College Mustangs men's track and field team, as well as associate head coach Shirvon Greene, both received awards representing the Atlantic Region by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Kimutai was selected as the Atlantic Region Men's Track Athlete of the Year for the 2021 outdoor track and field season. The freshman took first place each time he ran the 5,000-meter run during the regular season and also ranked 17th in the nation in the 1,500-meter run. At the NJCAA Div. I Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Kimutai earned back-to-back third-place finishes in the 10,000-meter run (31:16.47) and in the 5,000-meter run (15:06.32).

Coach Greene took home the Atlantic Region Women's Assistant Coach of the Year award. He has made a habit of winning this award, as he has claimed it four times in the past five completed seasons (there was no outdoor season in 2020). Specializing in the distance runners, Greene guided three of the Mustangs' female student-athletes to region-leading times, including Aaliyah Moore in the 800-meter run, Thulisile Amon in the 1,500-meter run and Tshwanelo Maruping in the 5,000-meter run. The Mustangs also had the top three times in each of the 800m and 1500m in the region this season.

The Mustangs had five student-athletes earn total six podium finishes at the 2021 NJCAA Div. I Outdoor Track & Field Championships a few weeks back. All six performances earn those athletes All-American honors in their respective events. The Mustangs will pick things back up in the fall with the cross country season before a full year of indoor and outdoor track and field in the spring.
