Panzarino, Wilson Lead Football to Win Over TCNJ

MADISON, N.J. (August 31, 2018) - Senior Mike Panzarino scored four touchdowns while classmate Ryan Wilson intercepted two passes as the Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham football earned a 35-21 win over TCNJ Friday. The Devils topped TCNJ for the second season straight, and have not lost to the Lions since a 17-13 setback in 2014. "Great win to start the season against a tough opponent, we played really well early and hung in tough at end as we knew they were going to make a run," said Head Coach Brian Surace. "Just a tribute to all three phases of the game (offense, defense, special teams), really complimented each other. Everyone made plays on all sides of the ball, That's really what you want to do in the first game. We didn't beat ourselves, and played really FDU football." FDU forced a three and out on the first series, and then the team orchestrated an 11-play, 88-yard drive to take a 7-0 lead. The Lions helped the cause, as an unnecessary roughness penalty on third down kept the drive alive. Senior Jagger Greenled the Devils into the redzone, and found Panzarino in the corner for a 15-yard score. Wilson made a nice interception on the ensuing series to set the Devils up in Lions territory, but FDU went 3-and-out. The Devils forced a second turnover on the evening, this time as sophomore Kyle Connelly jarred a ball loose and junior Jose Caceres pounced on the fumble. Five plays later, running back Steve Iannone found the back of the endzone, scoring on a 10-yard run. The Devils added to their lead in the second quarter, scoring 14 points in 4:40. Panzarino hauled in a fade pass from Green to make the score 21-0, and Wilson notched his second pick of the night, giving FDU great field position. Green hit Panzarino for the third time of the half, this time for 13 yards. FDU headed into the halftime break with a resounding 28-7 edge. After a scoreless third stanza, FDU began the fourth with a touchdown. They drove 57 yards in 10 plays, taking 5:17 off the clock, with Green hooking up with Panzarino for the fourth and final time. TCNJ scored two touchdowns in the fourth to make the game interesting, but the Devils were able to recover both onside kick attempts to stop the comeback. Green went 25-of-46 with four scores, as Panzarino hauled in 16 catches for 224 yards. Senior Dermot Egan and junior Khrystan Camilo each recorded three catches. Defensively, senior Isaiah Turner led the way with 11 tackles, as classmate Robert Planter had nine tackles including two for a loss. Planter also had 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble. FDU opens its road schedule next Saturday, traveling the short distance to take on William Paterson at 1 p.m.
