Pace Football Earns Homecoming OT Win Against SCSU

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – On a windy, rain-soaked Homecoming at Pace Stadium, the Pace University football team pulled out a 14-7 overtime victory over Southern Connecticut State on Saturday afternoon. The dramatic win moves the Setters' record to 5-3 this fall, marking their highest win total in a season since 1999. A 24-yard touchdown pass from senior Dan Anerella (Old Bridge, NJ/Manalapan) to sophomore Brian Dolan (Sparta, NJ/Pope John XXIII) on the first possession of overtime proved to be the game-winner for the home squad. The Setters' defense would go on to get a fourth-down stop on SCSU's first possession to clinch the triumph. In a game dominated by defenses, it was fittingly one of Pace's front-seven who was named the Homecoming MVP. Senior Prince Unaegbu (Boston, MA/Brighton) earned the annual honor after registering nine tackles, 1.5 sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss. Unaegbu led the way for a Pace defense that held the Owls to just the one touchdown and an average of just 4.1 yards per play. As a team, the Setters finished the game with five sacks, two interceptions and five pass break-ups. In addition to Unaegbu's disruption in the backfield, Kadeem Langhorne (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin), Joe Mendez(Old Bridge, NJ/Manalapan), Jah'Sheem Martin (Freeport, NY/Freeport), Jerameel Taylor (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth) each picked up at least a 0.5 sack in the game. Pace's interceptions were hauled in by Dustin Huseinovic (Harrison, NJ/Harrison) and Isaiah Williams (Newburgh, NY/Newburgh Free Academy). Pace's other touchdown of the game came in the first quarter courtesy of a 19-yard scoring scamper from freshman Antonio Giannico (Mahopec, NY/Archbishop Stepinac). The Setters held the 7-0 edge until the third quarter when SCSU tied up the contest thanks to a 24-yard touchdown pass from Matt Sanzaro to Hunter Fluegel. Up Next The Setters will play their final home game of the regular season next Saturday against Merrimack College. Pace will celebrate its Senior Day prior to the noon start.
