KIPKOSGEI NAMED NE10 OUTDOOR MALE TRACK ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

The Northeast-10 Conference announced its 2019 outdoor track and field major award winners on Tuesday, June 11. Senior Leakey Kipkosgei earned Male Track Athlete of the Year. "I'm really pleased with the season Leakey had," said head cross country and track and field coach Leo Mayo. "To win the National Championship in the steeplechase is an incredible accomplishment. This season, we focused on putting ourselves in a better position to win races. It's been a record-setting year for Leakey and he never had a bad race. It is a testament to the hard work that he and his teammates have put in this year." Kipkosgei, a Kapsabet, Kenya native, earned his second career national title at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship in Kingsville, Texas on Friday, May 24. Entering the championship, Kipkosgei ran a Division II-leading 8:44.13 at the Penn Relays. In the prelims at the national championship, Kipkosgei led the field with a time of 9:07.54 as he moved on to finals. The following day, he won the national title, breaking away from pack in the last 50 meters and finishing with a time of 8:52.86. His title earned him All-American status to give him 10 All-American honors in his cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track career. In 2016, Kipkosgei was a member of the distance medley relay team that earned the second national championship in AIC history. STAY CONNECTED:
