Fordham Selected to Host the 2018 & 2021 MAWPC Championships

Bridgeport, Pa. - (July 19, 2018) - The Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) Championship will span the Mid-Atlantic region from 2018-to-2021 as Fordham University in the Bronx (N.Y.), Bucknell University in Lewisburg (Pa.) and the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis (Md.) will serve as host sites for the tournament. Divided into two regions with the West Division (Connecticut College, Gannon University, McKendree University, Mercyhurst University, Monmouth College, Salem University, Washington & Jefferson College) teams now qualifying one program via a championship tournament at the Hallman Aquatics Center in Erie, Pa., each year to take on the East septet of Bucknell, Fordham, George Washington University, Johns Hopkins University, La Salle University, Navy and Wagner College in an eight-team clash with a berth to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship at stake, the MAWPC Championship experiences some changes starting in 2018. Previously, the West Division qualified two teams to the MAWPC Championship. However, La Salle, which competed in the West during the 2016 and 2017 seasons, moves to the East in 2018 to align all the Division I members on one side of the conference. For the first time in the history of the MAWPC following previous championship tournaments in 2016 (at Bucknell's Kinney Natatorum) and 2017 (at Navy's Lejeune Hall) the league championship comes to New York as Fordham hosts the 2018 event at the Col. Francis B. Messmore Aquatics Center. The rotation will then reset as Bucknell (2019), Navy (2020) and Fordham (2021) repeat as hosts over the next three seasons. The last time that Fordham's Col. Francis B. Messmore Aquatic Center hosted a championship event was the 1994 Patriot League Swimming & Diving Championship and the last water polo championship was the 1988 Metropolitan Championship.
