Harvey Named Chair of NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Committee

Montclair, NJ – Montclair State head women's basketball Karin Harvey has been named the chair of the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Committee for 2018-19. Harvey, elected by her peers on the committee, will oversee and help administer all aspects of the Division III women's basketball championship which heads to Salem, VA for the first time in March 2019. Harvey has spent the last six years on the NCAA committee serving on the Regional Advisory Committee from 2013-2016 and then as the Atlantic Region chair the past three seasons. She becomes the second Montclair State head coach to chair an NCAA sport committee. Anita Kubicka served as the chair of the Division III Softball Committee in 2010 and 2011. "I am honored and excited to be selected as the new chair of the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Committee and look forward to continuing my work with the committee members," said Harvey. "It's an exciting time for women's basketball across the county as we continue to grow and look for new opportunities to support women and student-athletes through our sport." Harvey completed her 11th season as the head coach of the Red Hawks in 2018 and has led Montclair State through one of the greatest runs of success by any team in the 90-year history of athletics. MSU went 25-4 this past season and claimed its sixth consecutive New Jersey Athletic Conference championship in addition to reaching the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time since 2013. Harvey was named the NJAC Coach of the Year for the fourth straight season and was tabbed for the same award by the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association. She was also selected as a Regional Coach of the Year by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association and was a finalist for the 2018 United States Marine Corps/WBCA NCAA Division III National Coach of the Year award. Over the last six campaigns, Harvey has guided Montclair State to a 161-20 mark (.890), and an incredible 97-9 (.899) ledger in conference play. That record includes six trips to the NCAA Tournament highlighted by a run to the Final Four in 2015. Harvey's team finished 31-2 that season, setting the school record for victories and placed third overall in the national tournament. The all-time winningest coach in program history, Harvey has compiled a record of 247-70 since taking over in 2007. She also spent two years as an assistant coach at MSU under current Virginia Commonwealth University head coach Beth O'Boyle before moving on to Drew University. Harvey led the Rangers to one of their most successful campaigns in 2006-07 as Drew set a single-season mark for victories. Under Harvey's watch, Montclair State has had 25 players selected to the All-NJAC Team in addition to five conference Player of the Year honors and two Defensive Player of the Year award recipients. Also, the list of women's basketball All-Americans has nearly doubled since Harvey returned to MSU 11 years ago.
