Johanek Claims Gold At Under 23 Championships


POZNAN, Poland – Rutgers rower Sarah Johanek claimed a gold medal at her first international competition as a member of the U.S. Under 23 women's coxed four on Saturday, July 28 in Poznan, Poland. The U.S. outpaced a five-team field that included Italy, Russia, Germany and Ukraine to win wire-to-wire in 7:02.60. The U.S. had a three-quarter-length lead at 500 meters and had open water by the 1,000-meter mark. The U.S. continued to push its advantage over the back half of the race, winning by about two lengths of open water. The women's four with coxswain of Johanek, Izzi Weiss, Samantha Lamos, Jennifer Mundelius and Carlisle Wheeler won its preliminary race on Thursday, defeating the same field of international competitors in over 11 seconds.
