Wagner names Alex Petrone head women's tennis coach
Staten Island, NY - Wagner College Director of Athletics Walt Hameline has announced the hiring of Alex Petrone as the new head women's tennis coach. Petrone, a native of Staten Island, brings an overabundance of tennis experience to Wagner. In his junior tennis career, Petrone won four ITF singles titles (2009-11) while participating in the US Open Juniors (2010 & 2011). Following his completion of prep school at Laurel Springs School, where he was a National Honor Society recipient and ranked as high as No. 14 among high school seniors by tennisrecuiting.net, Petrone enrolled to the University of Michigan. In Ann Arbor, where he served was a three-time team captain, Petrone had a stellar inaugural campaign, posting a 24-11 overall record, while notching a 17-7 dual match record. Ten of the 17 dual wins came out of the No. 3 spot. He was recognized by the ITA as the 2011-12 ITA Midwest Region Rookie Player of the Year while also earning All-Big Ten Conference second team accolades. In his junior season, Petrone compiled 18 overall singles wins, while racking up seven victories out of the No. 1 position en route to an all Big-Ten First Team selection. He concluded his four-year career at Michigan with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. His overall career singles record was 62-55 while his doubles record was 70-53. Petrone was ranked No. 53 in the country back in 2015 and No. 65 in doubles play. In the classroom, Petrone was a four-year member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) as well as a four-year member of the University of Michigan "Veteran Leaders" Academy. Petrone has worked as a private coach for those junior players aging from 11-18 years old. He has assisted potential student-athletes in committing to tennis programs such as: University of Michigan, United States Naval Academy, Bucknell, Lehigh, and Hofstra. Apart from his coaching duties, Petrone will be pursuing a Master's Degree in Business of Administration at Wagner.
