Monroe Mustangs Women’s Volleyball Announces 2018 Season Schedule
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., August 7, 2018 – After making its second straight appearance in the NJCAA Div. I Women's Volleyball National Championship tournament and winning its seventh consecutive Regional Championship in 2017, the Monroe College women's volleyball team has given itself a challenging 2018 slate of matches to help prepare the team for a late-season run. The Mustangs' 2018 schedule includes eight home matches, as well as an early-season tournament at the Monroe Athletic Complex that will feature some of the top teams in the country. After nine preseason games to tune up for the regular season, the Mustangs open 2018 at the Daytona State College Tournament from Sept. 6-8. Included in Monroe's five-match run in Daytona are matches against Daytona State and Hillsborough Community College, both of which finished 2017 receiving votes in the NJCAA Rankings. The Mustangs will hold their home opener on Tuesday, Sept. 11, against Fashion Institute of Technology at 7 p.m. They will then host the Monroe College Volleyball Invitational at the Monroe Athletic Complex from Thursday, Sept. 13 through Saturday, Sept. 15. The tournament includes top-ranked teams like No. 5 College of Southern Idaho, No. 7 Snow College and Hillsborough. Also appearing in the tournament is Wallace State Community College, which reached Nationals last year. Monroe also welcomes a tough Catawba Valley Community College team that weekend. The Mustangs will play three on the road before traveling to Tyler, Texas to play in the Tyler Junior College Invitational from Sept. 27-29. There, the Mustangs will take on ranked teams like No. 16 Tyler, No. 19 Blinn College and No. 6 Hill College, as well as Hutchinson Community College, which hosted last year's National Championship tournament, and North Central Texas College. The Mustangs will host Queensborough Community College on Thursday, Oct. 4 at 6 p.m., a match that will be bookended by another two road contests. They will then get their first look at the host site of the District L/M Championship tournament when they compete in the Wallace State Community College Tournament in Hanceville, Ala. From Oct. 12-13. Monroe hits the road once more for a tri-match at Northern Virginia Community College on Oct. 20 before hosting Nassau Community College in the Mustangs' final home game of the season on Wednesday, Oct. 24. The Mustangs will then take on Harford Community College in the Regional Championship in Bel Air, Md. On Friday, Oct. 26. The winner will head to the District L/M Championship Tournament in Hanceville, Ala., which will take place from Friday, Nov. 2, to Sunday, Nov. 4. The top two teams in that tournament will qualify for the 2018 NJCAA Division I National Championship Tournament, hosted by Hutchinson Community College in Hutchinson, Kan. This year's National Championship will take place from Tuesday, Nov. 13, to Sunday, Nov. 18. ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, and the newly added club men's volleyball team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
