Gavilanes Named to 2018 Men's MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List
POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Marist men's sophomore Allen Gavilanes has been named to the 2018 Men's MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List, United Coaches announced Tuesday. The MAC Hermann Trophy is the most prestigious individual award in college soccer and is presented annually to the most outstanding male and female players of the year. This year's winners will be announced Friday, Jan. 4, 2019 at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis. Named 2017 MAAC Offensive Player of the Year as well as Rookie of the Year, Gavilanes is one of two sophomores named to the Watch List. The standout forward earned many other honors after his freshman campaign, including College Soccer News All-Freshman Second Team, East Coast Athletic Conference Honorable Mention Team, United Soccer Coaches Association of America First Team All-Northeast and was ranked by Top Drawer Soccer as the #24 Freshman in the country. "It's a great individual acknowledgement," remarked head coach Matt Viggiano. "He's put in a lot of work this summer, and I think he's looking forward to the challenge that comes with this kind of notoriety." In Gavilanes' first season, he led the Red Foxes with eight goals, nine assists, 25 points, 57 shots and 23 shots on goal. He was the MAAC leader in shots, shots per game (3.17) and points per game (1.39), while he was tied for first in assists per game (0.50). The Red Foxes have two exhibition games slated before the non-conference opener at Albany on August 24th at 7 p.m. The team will host Hartford on August 12th before traveling to NJIT on August 18th.
