Women's Soccer Falls to Fairfield 1-0 in Home Opener


BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- The LIU Brooklyn women's soccer team made a solid debut in their 2018 campaign, but fell 1-0 to Fairfield on LIU Field on Friday. The Stags got an early second half goal by freshman Amy Akerley and was able to hold off the LIU attack for the remainder of the contest to start their season with a victory. In the 49th minute, sophomore forward Alex Madden took a shot that rebounded off the Blackbirds directly to Akerley, who's rebound shot eluded LIU goalkeeper Aline Allmann for the only goal of the contest. The Blackbirds had two good chances for the equalizer in the second half on shots by Kimberly Butland and Sarah DeWitt, but were unable to find the back of the net. Freshman keeper Aytana Muschajew earned her first shutout (5 saves) in her first start of her collegiate career for the Stags. The Blackbirds' (0-1) senior goalkeeper Aline Allmann allowed the one goal, but made four saves, playing the full ninety minutes in goal.
