WETZEL AND BERRY NAMED 2018 FOOTBALL CAPTAINS
WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ- Monmouth University fifth year senior Ryan Wetzel (Freehold, NJ/Colts Neck) and junior Tymere Berry (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) have been named as team captains for the 2018 season. Wetzel, a three-year starter on the offensive line, was named First Team All-Big South as a junior. The Freehold, NJ native was a preseason all-conference selection and is a AFCA AllState GoodWorks Team nominee. "Ryan has been a dominant personality on this team for a number of years," said Monmouth Head Coach Kevin Callahan. He's always the first up when it comes to community service and he is an extremely hard worker whether it is in the weight room or the summer program. There is no doubt as a veteran offensive lineman he's the leader of that unit. Being named captain is really a result of all the hard work he's put in but also a result of the respect that our team has for him." "It is incredible, this is my fifth year and now I get to be a captain," said Wetzel. "It's a credit to our program, the captains that I've had when I've been here and . I'm here to take on this leadership role the best way I can, I'm really looking forward to it." Berry, a two year starter at cornerback, was a second team all-conference selection in 2017 after leading the Big South in passes defended with 14 breakups. The Toms River, NJ native was recently selected as a preseason all-conference selection. "Having Tymere named as a captain speaks to the leadership he's demonstrated to the team going back through the winter and the spring," said Monmouth Head Coach Kevin Callahan. "He has the respect of his teammates on both sides of the ball, it shows that they looked at him as someone they want to represent them. I think it's a great selection by our team." "I couldn't believe it when I heard, I am just blessed with the opportunity," said Berry. "I just want to live up the standard as captain. I've been working hard and trying to lead by example for the younger guys, I am just glad that they see that in me and they want to follow my lead." Wetzel and Berry will be joined by two game-captains, selected during the week. Monmouth opens up the 2018 season on August 31 against Eastern Michigan.
