Marist Football Closes Camp With Final Scrimmage
POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist football team held its third and final scrimmage of preseason camp on Friday afternoon at Tenney Stadium. The scrimmage consisted of live game action with a mixture of red zone possessions. On the opening drive, red-shirt sophomore quarterback Jacob Hallenbeck connected with senior wide receiver Juston Christian for a 50-yard completion. However, the defense immediately halted the drive with a tackle for loss and two pass deflections at the line of scrimmage. In the final drive of what was the first quarter, Hallenbeck's 56-yard touchdown pass to red-shirt junior Anthony Olivencia was called back due to holding downfield. On the final play of the period, red-shirt sophomore cornerback Alex Bergan picked off a pass in the end zone. After the first four drives, the scrimmage shifted to seven drives of red zone work, with the offense starting each possession at the defense's 25-yard line. The defense held the offense scoreless on the first six drives with help from a blocked field goal by red-shirt junior defensive lineman Eddie Zinn-Turner, a third-down sack by red-shirt junior Peter Delatour, and an interception by red-shirt senior safety Wesley Beans. The offense put its first points up on the board on the final drive of the first half of the scrimmage, as Hallenbeck threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Christian. Following the conclusion of red zone drives, regular drives resumed in the second half. The first and final points of the half came on the third drive, as freshman kicker Max Heinrich booted a 38-yard field goal. Freshman defensive lineman Carson Badamo had a pair of sacks in the second half, helping to keep the offense out of the end zone. All statistics are unofficial. Marist opens the 2018 season on Saturday, Sept. 1 against Georgetown at Tenney Stadium. The Red Foxes will have five home games this season, their 10th as a member of the Pioneer Football League. Two former Marist football players – Terrence Fede (Buffalo Bills) and Jason Myers (New York Jets) – are currently on NFL rosters. For information on tickets, please click here.
