ALBANY, N.Y. – Fifth-year senior quarterback Vincent Testaverde will start the University at Albany football team’s season-opener at Pittsburgh on Sept. 1, Head Coach Greg Gattuso has announced.

Testaverde, a transfer from Miami (Fla.) in his first and only year of eligibility with the Great Danes, emerged from a three-way competition in training camp to win the starting nod.

The son of longtime NFL quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Vinny Testaverde, the younger Testaverde played well in UAlbany’s Spring Game this past April, completing 11 of 18 passes and tossing two touchdowns.

Testaverde last appeared in a college game in 2014, when as a true freshman at Texas Tech he completed 15-of-26 passes for 116 yards against Texas. He then transferred to Miami, his father’s alma mater, where he redshirted in 2015.

The 6-foot-1, 211-pound Testaverde joined the Great Danes in the fall of 2017 and sat out the season under NCAA transfer rules.

He switched his number to No. 14 this fall as a nod to his dad, who played 21 seasons in the NFL, including six with the New York Jets.

UAlbany has depth at quarterback with redshirt junior Will Brunson, who started all 11 games last season and threw for 1,889 and nine touchdowns, as well as redshirt sophomore Nyc Burns, a junior-college transfer from Northeast Oklahoma A&M who redshirted at Oklahoma State in 2016.
