Newcomers Shine in Volleyball Season Opener
Garden City, N.Y. - Newcomers Sara Bisbe and Grace Wegmann wasted no time acclimating to Adelphi traditions, helping the volleyball program to a three-set sweep (25-12, 25-19, 25-18) of Georgian Court University Tuesday evening. Bisbe matched Cara McKenzie with a team-high nine kills each, combining for four block assists and three service aces. Wegmann, who stepped into the setter role put her career high at 27, adding two service aces of her own. Katarina Warburton donned the libero uniform and finished with 23 digs. The Panthers stretched out to a 15-6 lead after three consecutive kills from the home team capped a 7-0 run in the opening set. The Lions snuck in six more points before the set came to a close, as Bisbe closed the door with her third kill. The second set got underway as more of a back-and-forth affair, with Georgian Court ultimately leading 10-7. A kill from McKenzie sparked a six-point spurt for the Brown and Gold, putting the home team ahead. Service aces and miscues handed the hosts the second set, by a 25-19 final. Adelphi increased their kill total each set and took the third by a 25-18 final, accounting for 15 kills with a .344 hitting percentage. The Panthers held the upper hand in all categories, including 10 total services aces and a 6-3 advantage in blocks. Adelphi takes their first round trip this weekend when they travel to Canton, Ohio to compete at the Cavalier Classic, hosted by Walsh University. The team is set to take on the home team in their first match of the tournament, slated for 10 a.m. on Friday, August 31.
