Field Hockey Starts Season With 3-1 Win Over Ursinus


GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University field hockey team started the season with a 3-1 win over Ursinus College on Saturday. Forward Rachel Galante (sr. Mount Laurel, NJ/Collingswood) scored twice in the first half and the Profs led 2-1 at the break. Her first goal came on a breakaway (14:05) with a shot into the cage from the 10-yard line. Midfielder/forward Jamie Mayer (fr. Huntingdon Valley, PA/Lower Moreland) tied the score less than two minutes later when she knocked in a rebound after a save. Galante blasted a shot inside the circle (32:27) for her second goal on a pass from forward Krystyna Hovel (fr. Gibbsboro, NJ/Eastern Reg.) who took a penalty corner. Forward Bridget Guinan (fr. Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) added some insurance with her first collegiate score at 41:07 and Galante had an assist. Rowan edged Ursinus in shots, 13-10 while the penalty corners were even at 11. Prof goalie Morgan Novak(jr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Mem.) made five saves for the shutout. Bears' goalie Jules Singer (sr. Newtown, PA/Council Rock N.) turned away four shots. Rowan is home again on Wednesday, Sept. 5 versus Eastern University at 7 p.m.
