Volleyball Drops 3-0 Final to Portland

PORTLAND, Ore.— The LIU Brooklyn volleyball team ended its six-match trip out west with a 3-0 (21-25, 11-25, 14-25) loss to Portland in the final match of the North Portland Marriott Invite on Saturday afternoon.

The opening set featured several lead changes as both teams were fresh off five-set victories from the night before. The Blackbirds (2-4) grabbed control of the back-and-forth battle with a 5-0 run led by a pair of service aces from junior Emily Magee to take the 17-12 lead. The unbeaten Pilots (6-0) responded with a 7-2 spree to tie the match up at 19 all. Momentum continued for the home team as a 6-1 run to end the set sealed the 25-21 set win.

Portland took control early in set two opening with 9-3 start as LIU struggled to find its footing. The Blackbirds were unable to break through at the net as the Pilots recorded six blocks in the second set to push ahead with a 25-11 set win. The third set featured an early 4-1 run by the Pilots before the Blackbirds recorded kills by juniors Kora Schaberl and Filippa Hansson and a bad set to get within one point at 5-4. Portland used a 8-0 run to create the distance it needed to walk away with the three-set sweep.

Senior Viktoria Fink was named to the All-Tournament team after finishing with double digit kills for the second straight match with 10. Hansson, junior Jovana Stekovic and freshman Myrthe Maring each added five kills. Junior Amanda Hubbard dished out 20 assists while classmate Natalia Rivera finished with 11 digs.
