Brown, Valerius-Twyman Pick up NEFC Weekly Awards

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., September 5, 2018 – After a big 24-8 victory over the New Jersey Warriors to open the season, quarterback Jalen Brown and defensive lineman Jordan Valerius-Twyman of the Monroe College football team were both picked for Northeast Football Conference (NEFC) Weekly Player Awards, as announced by the NEFC on Wednesday. Brown was named the first NEFC Offensive Player of the Week of the 2018 season on Wednesday after an electric performance in the Mustangs' opener. He completed six passes for 44 yards, but he did most of his damage with his legs. Brown rushed for 153 yards on 11 carries, scoring two long touchdowns in the win. He broke away for a 55-yard score near the end of the first half, pushing the Mustangs into the lead. Brown then had an even more impressive 78-yard scamper to the end zone late in the third quarter to make it a 17-8 game. Valerius-Twyman earned this week's NEFC Special Teams Player of the Week award. With just a few seconds left in the first half, the Warriors lined up for a 28-yard field goal to try to take the lead before the break. Valerius-Twyman broke through the offensive line and got his hands in front of the ball, blocking the field-goal attempt to keep the Mustangs ahead heading into halftime. The Mustangs will look to keep up a strong start to the season on Saturday, Sept. 8, when they visit Nassau Community College in Garden City, N.Y. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
