FRESHMEN LEAD GREAT DANES TO VICTORY OVER SAINTS

Score: UAlbany 3, Siena 0

Location: Loudonville, New York - Siena College

Records: UAlbany (4-3); Siena (3-2-1)

Short Story: The UAlbany soccer team defeated Siena 3-0 on Thursday, September 6th at Siena College. Senior Mariah Williams scored the first goal. Freshmen Jada Colbert and Christina Cernuto scored a goal a piece in the second half.

How It Happened:

Claire Stackel crossed the goalie box from the right to assist Mariah Williams in scoring the first goal of the game at the twelve minute mark.

Despite many attempts, Williams’ goal remained the only goal scored by either team going into the second half.

Led by their senior teammate, two freshman stood out in the second half, scoring their first goals of the season. Midfielder Jada Colbert, assisted by Kimberly Dieroff, dribbled in from the right and blasted a tailing shot across the inside left post in the 60th minute, putting another mark on the board for the Great Danes.

In the 77th minute, Christina Cernuto grabbed a loose ball in front of the goal and turned to score in close. Cernuto was assisted by Gina Bracamonte.

Andrea Leitner served as goal keeper for the Great Danes and made three saves during the match.

Comments From Head Coach Nick Bochette:

"We're pleased with the result tonight against a technical and well organized Siena side. We have been creating quality chances in just about every game we've played, but it's fantastic for those chances to culminate in three goals. I'm also happy to see two of our freshman get on the score sheet today. We have some real quality and danger in our youth, and we're excited to see Jada and Christina open their scoring career here.

Keeping a clean sheet is just as important, and speaks to our desire to maintain a certain level throughout the 90 minutes. We were far from perfect, however, and we still have a lot of progress to make in order to be where we want to at the end of the year."

Next: The Great Danes will play at home on Sunday, September 9th at 1:00 p.m. against Rhode Island.
