AU Holds off Keuka to for Second Straight Win

ALFRED, NY -- The Alfred University women's soccer team won it's second home game in a row on Saturday night as the Saxons (3-1-0, 0-0 Empire 8) defeated the Keuka College Wolves by a score of 2-1. AU came out of the gates with a lot of energy, getting the ball out in front of the net early and often. Quinn Fowler (Chester, NY/Washingtonville) put the Saxons on the board first with a goal in the 16thminute. AU extended its lead around the midpoint of the first half when Emily Wright (Dallas, TX/Plano West) placed a corner kick right in front of the net where Amanda Guariglia(Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream South) headed it in to put the Saxons up 2-0. "The first half was great because the team came flying out and knew they had to have a lot of intensity in this one," Head Coach Craig Yanni said. The game became a defensive struggle in the second half. Keuka did get on the board in the 72nd minute from deep outside the box to cut the Alfred lead to just one, but that is all they would get as the Saxons were able to hold off the Wolves for the remainder of the game. "We came out a little flat in the second half. We've had some players out for a while, for example Emily [Wright] was out for a week and was a little winded but was able to hold her own and help us down the stretch," Yanni said. AU will be back at home this Wednesday for a matchup with Medaille College, set to start at 6PM.
