Pioneers Earn Pair of NEC Weekly Honors
OMERSET, N.J. – Two members of the Sacred Heart football team were recognized by the Northeast Conference on Monday for their standout performances in the team's 30-14 victory at Bucknell on Saturday. Senior running back Jordan Meachum was named the Northeast Conference's Offensive Player of the Week, while defensive lineman Chris Agyemang was named the Defensive Player of the Week.
Meachum carried 28 times and rushed for a career-best 178 yards and one touchdown on Saturday, marking the second straight week he eclipsed the 100-yard plateau. It was also the second straight week he set a new career-high for rushing yards after running for 132 in last weekend's season-opener. Averaging 6.4 yards per carry, Meachum capped SHU's opening drive of the game with a 30-yard touchdown run to give the Pioneers the early 7-0 lead.
On the team's opening drive of the second half, Meachum broke off runs of 29-yards and 33 yards on back-to-back plays to help set up a touchdown that put SHU ahead for good at 21-14. He later added a 38-yard run on 3rd-and-14 with just over three minutes to go in the fourth quarter with SHU protecting a 24-14 lead.
Agyemang helped lead the Sacred Heart defense, which allowed just 178 yards of total offense and seven offensive points to the Bison. Agyemang finished with four tackles, including three tackles for a loss, two sacks and one forced fumble. He came away with a tackle for a three-yard loss on second down following SHU's touchdown to start the third quarter, helping to force a Bucknell punt. He also added a quarterback hurry on the next drive. Agyemang helped put the exclamation point on the victory by coming away with a strip sack on the game's final play, which was picked up and returned 32 yards for a defensive touchdown as time expired.
Sacred Heart has now won three weekly awards from the NEC through the first two weeks of the season, following Julius Chestnut's Rookie of the Week honor in Week 1.
Following a bye, the Pioneers will open up Northeast Conference play on Sept. 22 at Wagner.
