Monroe Women’s Soccer Jumps Three Spots to No. 6 in NJCAA Poll
CHARLOTTE, N.C., September 11, 2018 – With another pair of impressive wins pushing its record to 4-0, the Monroe College women's soccer team moved up three spots in the NJCAA Division I Women's Soccer Rankings to No. 6, as announced by the NJCAA on Tuesday. Monroe spent its past week down in Florida to take on some tougher competition. The week began on Thursday at then-No. 4 Daytona State College, who the Mustangs defeated, 3-2, to improve to 3-0 on the year. This was the Mustangs' second victory over a Top-10 team after beating Harford Community College back on Aug. 26. Monroe then closed out the weekend with a 4-0 shutout against Broward College on Friday. The Mustangs are led offensively by Maria Santin, who has scored a team-high seven goals and 14 points. Juliana Pires is close behind with 13 points, including five goals and three assists. Mayara Queiroz Reis matches Pires' five goals. Goalkeeper Marta Alemany is 4-0 with a 1.06 goals-against average. The Mustangs look forward to one of their toughest weekends this season up in Rochester, N.Y. They will take on No. 1 Eastern Florida State College on Friday, Sept. 14, at 12 p.m. Monroe then faces off with No. 10 Monroe Community College on Sunday, Sept. 16, at 12 p.m. ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, and the newly added club men's volleyball team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
