Brockport Tops St.John Fisher 4-1

The Golden Eagles came out flying in their home opener Wednesday night and it didn't take long for them to find the back of the net. Ayub Jeylani scored his fourth goal in as many games within the first 5 minutes of the half on a scrum inside Fishers box. It looked as if the field was slanted towards the Cardinals goalkeeper with the number of offensive chances the Green and Gold had early on. All of that pressure would eventually pay off for the Golden Eagles at the 26th minute, when Quinton Volpe let a shot fly from outside the 18, beating the Cardinals netminder and advancing Brockport into the lead, 2-0. Volpe was not done quite yet. Nearly a minute later in what looked like déjà vu, Volpe found himself with the same shot opportunity a step outside the box and let a missile go, beating Fishers' goalie top shelf, and sending the Golden Eagles into the half up 3-0. The second half saw more of the same from the Golden Eagles. Brockport's speed and physicality would prove to be too much for Fisher. The play grew chippy in the second half, resulting in a penalty kick for Brockport's Jeff Hibbard after a Cardinal player took out his feet inside of their own box. Hibbard capitalized on his opportunity, scoring his third goal of the 2018 campaign and putting Brockport ahead, 4-0. Brockport continued to pour it on for the remainder of the half, pressuring the Cardinals goalie from all angles. The Cardinals attempted to answer the Golden Eagle offense with a late goal but it was too-little-too-late. "I was so impressed with how we executed our game plan tonight," Said Head Coach Gary Lapietra, " We were so effective in our attack and it showed by how we finished our chances early in the match." The men's soccer team will be back in action this Saturday, Sept. 15 on the road at Ithaca College.
