Football Takes on Southern Virginia at Sprague Field on Saturday
Montclair, NJ - Montclair State will look to build off its momentum from last week when the Red Hawks host Southern Virginia University in their NJAC opener on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 1:00 pm. MSU kicked off its 2018 campaign in impressive fashion with a 37-14 triumph over Salve Regina. The 37 points were the most scored by Montclair in a season opener since 2004 and it was the Red Hawks largest point total since a 45-0 win at Southern Virginia in 2015. JA'QUILL BURCH, making his first career start, threw for 171 yards and a pair of touchdowns. KASON CAMPBELL and CRAIG MERKLE each scored twice with WILLIE BARR racing 50 yards for a TD. Merkle, who hauled in a 2-yard TD reception, also had a 50-yard touchdown run with Campbell scoring on a 23-yard reception and an electrifying 92-yard kickoff return. Linebacker MAURO ALTAMURAregistered nine tackles and a sack. SVU fell to 0-2 both overall and in conference play as its comeback against Rowan fell short in a 20-17 loss. The Knights accumulated 324 total yards of offense. Tate Briggs was collected 194 yards through the air, while Josh Newman led the receivers with 72 yards on four catches. This will be the fifth and final meeting between the teams at least for the foreseeable future as the Knights will leave the NJAC following the 2018 season. Montclair State has won all four previous meetings including the last two by shutout and three times overall. Last year, Montclair registered a 24-0 victory in Buena Vista and won 17-0 in the last time the squads met at Sprague Field.
