Football Heads Out on the Road to Christopher Newport
Montclair, NJ - The Red Hawks are off to a good start after two solid victories at home. Now its time to hit the road as Montclair heads to Virginia for a matchup with Christopher Newport on Saturday. Montclair State is 2-0 for the first time since 2011 after it opened up NJAC play with a 24-3 victory against Southern Virginia. Quarterback JA'QUILL BURCH threw two touchdown passes and junior KASON CAMPBELL returned a kickoff for a touchdown for the third consecutive game. Linebacker MAURO ALTAMURA had a fine all-around game with 14 tackles (12 solo), a sack, fumble recovery and three tackles for loss. The Red Hawks finished with 361 yards of offense and held the ball for 28 of the final 45 minutes of the contest. Montclair totaled 31:42 in possession time, including 11:56 in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile the Captains got an unexpected bye week as Hurricane Florence forced the cancellation of the Bobcats game at Frostburg State. The last time CNU was on the field, they defeated Hampden-Sydney 17-13 on the road. The Captains recorded seven sacks and held HSC scoreless over the final 30 minutes. This will be the fourth meeting between the Red Hawks and Captains. Montclair State won the initial contest in 2015 at Sprague Field 32-22 scoring 25 points in the second half to overcome a 15-point deficit at the half. CNU returned the favor with a 28-21 overtime victory in Newport News, VA in 2016 and last season posted a 16-8 win at Montclair State.
