Men's Soccer Tallies 3-1 Victory Over Centenary


MADISON, N.J. (September 19, 2018) - Freshman Tiernan Grey made eight saves in his collegiate debut as the FDU-Florham men's soccer team notched a 3-1 victory over Centenary Wednesday evening. The Devils improve to 2-5-0 on the season, as the Cyclones dropped to 1-5-0. The guest Cyclones controlled the opening of the game, taking the first four shots of the night. Grey came up big in those first 12 minutes, making two saves. The Devils got their legs and started to take control, with sophomores Brandon McGregor and Justin Estremera each taking multiple shots. The Devils finally broke through in the 34th minute with the games first goal. Estremera played a perfect long ball to sophomore Ricky La Stella, who rang a shot off the post for his first goal of the season. FDU nearly doubled the lead in the 41st minute, but a shot off a free kick from senior John Timmes was saved. FDU held a slim 9-7 lead to shots through 45 minutes, but Centenary had the 2-1 edge in corner kicks. Centenary had a glorious counter attack going in the 59th minute, but freshman Vincenzo Russo blocked a shot as the Cyclones had a 3-on-1 advantage. Sophomore Nick Halpin had a header from in close denied by the Centenary keeper in the 60th minute, keeping the score at 1-0. FDU broke through for the second goal in the 69th minute. Halpin played a nice deep to Estremera, who beat his man on the far and dipped in. His low shot bounced off the post and in for his third tally of the year. Just 1:45 later, McGregor notched his first goal of the year, ripping a shot from 15 yards out past the keeper. Grey made a trio of saves in the 72nd minute to keep the guests off the scoreboard, but the Cyclones broke through with 23 seconds left in the game. Off a Daisuke Suzuki corner, Matt Miller headed the ball into the goal to end the shutout. Estremera fired a team-best six shots, as McGregor and Timmes combined for five. FDU continues its homestand as they welcome Immaculata to Robert T. Shields Field for a 6 p.m. game Saturday night.
