Sculling Earns Three Top Finishes at Cayuga Sprints


ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's sculling team opened up its 2018 season on Sunday morning with the Cayuga Sculling Sprints. There were a total of 13 entries on the day, comprised of Ithaca, RIT and Cascadilla Boat Club, and the Bombers came away with three of four medals. The race started with a 2k time-trial followed by a 1k sprint. The final results were determined by doubling the 1k time and adding it to the 2k time trial. In the open 2x, senior Savannah Brija and sophomore Lauren O'Dell dominated, finishing in first place overall with a time of 15:22 - a new course record - 42 seconds ahead of the second place finisher, RIT. The duo started the day as one of only two boats to crack seven minutes in the time trial, finished the 2000 meters in 7:37.4. They followed that up with a 3:52.6 finish in the 1k sprint, which was the lone time under four minutes. The Bombers also earned another medal in the lightweight 2x. Jennie Brian and Sophie Westfield won the field and came in third place overall, just missing out on a second-place finish by .1 second. In the 2k time trial, the pair of Brian and Westfield was the second team to finish in under eight minutes, with a time of 7:58.1. They went on to finish the 1k sprint in 4:03.0 for a final time of 16:04.1. Junior Liza Caldicott also earned a medal on the day, finishing first in the lightweight 1x and fourth among all singles racings. Caldicott started the day with an 8:42.6 finish in the 2k time trial and followed that up with a 4:24.9 time in the 1k sprint to finish the day with a time of 17:32.4. Ithaca alum Karina Feitner '18 – a 2018 CRCA All-American – racing with Cascadilla Boat Club, won the open 1x and finished fourth overall. In the 2k time trial, Feitner raced to a time of 8:09.1. She then finished the 1k sprint in 4:04.5 for a final time of 16:18.1. Senior Sierra Keat came in second behind Feitner and sixth overall with a final time of 16:46.5. She opened the day up with an 8:23.3 time in the 2k time trial before racing to a time of 4:11.6 in the 1k sprint. Ithaca had several other boats compete as well, in both the open 2x and open 1x. The duo of senior Ella Sarachan and sophomore June Fortner finished third among the open 2x boats as well as fifth overall.
