Men’s Soccer Caps Non Conference with 3-2 Win Over NJIT
HACKENSACK, N.J. – The LIU Brooklyn men's soccer team wrapped up their non-conference slate with a win Tuesday afternoon, beating NJIT, 3-2. With the win, the Blackbirds move to 5-3-1 heading into Northeast Conference action. Neither team would score in the first half, and freshman Sam Ilin made four saves to keep it 0-0 at the halftime break. The Blackbirds got on the board first in the 58th minute, when junior Giuseppe Barone scored his first goal of the season. The forward won a scramble in the box and blasted it in to put LIU on the board. But NJIT would answer less than a minute later, scoring in the 59th minute to tie it up, 1-1. The Blackbirds would take the lead ten minute later, when senior Rasmus Hansen scored his fourth goal of the season. Off a pass from classmate Romario Guscott, Hansen would rip a shot into the top left corner that put LIU on top, 2-1. Five minutes later, Guscott would score what would end up being the game winning goal. Off a pass from sophomore Fredrik Mathisen, Guscott would score in the box to make it 3-1 Blackbirds. The insurance goal was needed, as NJIT would deflect a shot with 35 seconds left in the game, cutting the lead to 3-2. Up next, the Blackbirds open NEC play taking on the defending champions and local rivals St. Francis Brooklyn, Sunday, September 30 at 1 p.m. in Brooklyn Bridge Park.
