Monroe Football Keeps No. 16 Spot in NJCAA Poll after 3-0 Start
CHARLOTTE, N.C., September 25, 2018 – The Monroe College football team held tight to the No. 16 spot in the NJCAA Football Coaches' Poll after moving to 3-0 this past weekend, as announced by the NJCAA on Tuesday. The Mustangs keep their No. 16 ranking after defeating Wagner College JV on the road by a 55-0 margin. Monroe rushed for 335 yards on 25 totes for an average of 13.4 yards per carry in the win, also scoring six touchdowns on the ground. With another big game on the ground, the Mustangs rank third in the NJCAA with 286.3 rushing yards per game. Quarterback Jalen Brown leads the rushing attack with 265 yards over three games, including four rushing touchdowns. Zaire Jones has rushed for 241 yards in two games, averaging 120.5 yards per game on the ground. Rashon McNeil leads the Mustangs with 25 tackles on the season, followed by Grant Melton, who has made 23 tackles. Alton Nobles, Jordan Valerius-Twyman and Niadre Zouzoua all tie for the team lead with 4.5 tackles for loss, while Zouzoua leads the way with 3.0 sacks and a forced fumble on the season. Emmanuel Appiah-Tahkyi has three interceptions, while Qudair Sims and Jahvaron Burks each have one. Joshua Boyd has broken up four passes. The Mustangs are scheduled to play next on Saturday, Oct. 6, when they visit Valley Forge Military College in Wayne, Pa. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 18 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as club men's and women's rugby, and the newly added club men's volleyball team, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Monroe Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus as of the fall of 2017, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
