#8 William Smith tames Tigers 1-0

GENEVA, N.Y.-The eighth-ranked William Smith College soccer team notched a 1-0 win over the Rochester Institute of Technology on Cozzens Field this afternoon. With the win the Herons are now 6-2-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the Liberty League while the Tigers fall to 4-3-0 and 0-2-0 in conference play. William Smith had the game's first scoring opportunity in the 14th minute. Senior Megan Barwick fired a shot from the top of the box that rattled off the crossbar and over the end line. The Herons continued to apply pressure with Barwick taking three of the game's next four shots. Two went high and one was stopped by Ingrida Ivaska. William Smith broke the deadlock in the 29th when junior Emilie Sauvayre scored her first collegiate goal. She intercepted a Tiger clearing pass, dribbled around a defender, and buried a shot from 20-yards out into the upper right corner of the goal. RIT thought they had the game tied at 1-1 but Mia White's equalizer was waved off because she was offside on the play. Piper Zimmerman dribbled the ball down the right wing and sent a crossing pass to White, who one-timed a shot into the net. The goal was waved off because White had snuck behind her defender just a second before Zimmerman made her crossing pass. The Herons had a pair of scoring opportunities in the 67th minute. Sophomore Sheila McQuilen and Barwick had point blank shots stopped by Alyssa Salls. The Tigers last scoring opportunity came in the 87th minute when a Heron defender was shown a yellow card. On the ensuing play, Morgan Montieth's shot from inside the 18-yard box was smothered by Veronica Romines. Romines played all 90 minutes in goal for William Smith and made two saves. Ivaska and Salls each played a half for RIT. Ivaska made four stops in the first half while Salls stopped five in the second. The Herons finished today's contest with a 29-8 edge in shots and a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks. William Smith will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts Bard in a Liberty League contest. The match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
