Women's Soccer Ends 4-Game Skid with Dominant Victory over Saint Elizabeth

The Maritime College women's soccer team didn't start the season the way they wanted to, but after a dominant 6-1 victory over the College of Saint Elizabeth on Wednesday night, the Privateers are back on track and ready for conference play. The scoring opened up early for Maritime as Brianna Etienne(Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) netted a goal in the 6th minute of the game. Leigh Kouril (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown)played a through ball up the left side and Etienne took the perfect pass inside the box and delivered a strike to the far right side past the goalie to make it a 1-0 lead. The goal marked Etienne's second of the season and just the third overall for the Privateers. Less than five minutes later, Maritime found the back of the net once again, this time off a well played corner kick from MacKenzie Fabiani (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point). Freshman defender Rachel Peterson (Latham, N.Y./Albany Acadmey for Girls) did a fantastic job in traffic of getting her head to the ball and placed it right past the goalie as the Privateers jumped out to a 2-0 lead within the first ten minutes of the game. Etienne and Peterson weren't done yet leading the first half offense, and in the 20th minute, Peterson once again got herself in control of a corner kick in traffic. However, the Latham, NY native decided to play it back to Etienne who had plenty of space to shoot and she chipped it over the goalie's head and gave Maritime a commanding 3-0 first half lead. In the final minutes of the first half, the Eagles stepped up their defense and began playing more aggressively. The adjustment paid dividends as they were able to keep the lead at three going into the second half. The Privateers offense wasn't going to settle for a three goal lead and in the first ten minutes of the second half, they scored again. This time, it was a great individual effort from Ojaira Suero (Bronx, N.Y./Urban Assembly) who stole the ball from the Saint Elizabeth defense, then dribbled the rest of the way before beating the goalie one-on-one to net her first career goal. Just three minutes later, Fabiani took advantage of a foul committed inside the box from the Eagles and converted a penalty kick to make it 5-0. Fabiani connected perfectly on the penalty attempt as the goalie guessed the right way, but she put the ball just inside the post to get her first goal of the season. Saint Elizabeth caught the Privateers defense sleeping right after the goal as they answered back with their first goal of the night, but that would be the last chance the Eagles saw for the remainder of the game. With eight minutes remaining in the game, Brianna Etienne (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) played a perfect cross in front of the net that found her sister, Caitlin Etienne (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City), who easily put the ball away. The sisters connected for the sixth goal of the game and Caitlin's first of the season. Senior goalkeeper Cammie Havens (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant Borough) picked up the win and tallied two saves on the night. The Privateers get back on the field Saturday, as they open up Skyline Conference play at St. Joseph's Brooklyn at 4:00 p.m.
