Women's Soccer Wins Third Straight

TROY, N.Y. - Senior Emily Dunn scored the only goal of the game and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) held on for its third straight victory, 1-0 over Hartwick College, on Wednesday night at East Campus Stadium. With the win, the Engineers improve to 4-4 overall, while the Hawks drop to 5-3-1. After an evenly played opening 45 minutes in which the shots were all square at five apiece, the Engineers struck for the contest's only marker. Senior Maddie Steinmetz(Malvern, PA/West Chester East) laid a ball off to Dunn (Seattle, WA/Ballard) at the left corner of the penalty area. She took a touch towards the middle of the field, before launching a shot under the crossbar and out of the reach of Hartwick junior goalkeeper Cassandra Robataille (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam) for her first goal of the year. Dunn nearly made it a double in the 72nd minute, but her looping shot from the middle of the 18 was pushed off the left post and out by Robataille. The ball bounded across the face of goal, before the Hawks defense was able to clear it away. The Engineers were able to limit Hartwick to just two shots over the final 18 minutes to secure the win. The only attempt that tested Rensselaer junior goalkeeper Joey Lyons (Harwood, MD/Southern) came from distance in the 69th minute. Hartwick's two best chances to score came in the opening five minutes of each half. In the second minute of play, senior Kiley Richardson (Flanders, NJ/Roxbury) found the junction of the left post and the crossbar with a drive from 35 yards out. Similarly, in the 48th minute, sophomore Gabrielle Kreppein (Glens Falls, NY/South Glens Falls) saw her try from the left side of the 18 skim off the top of the bar and out of play. Rensselaer finished with a narrow 11-10 edge in shots, including 5-2 in goal. Dunn had a game-high four, including three on target. Lyons (4-4) earned her first clean sheet of the year, making two saves, while Robataille (5-3-1) had four stops at the other end. The Engineers resume Liberty League play this Saturday, when they visit Skidmore College (3pm). Hartwick hosts Empire 8 foe Alfred University on Saturday (4pm).
