Football Falls Short on Homecoming
WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson football team (0-5, 0-4 NJAC) fell short of visiting Kean (1-4, 1-3 NJAC), 16-0, as the Pioneers celebrated Homecoming Oct. 6. HOW IT HAPPENED:
Backed up inside its own five-yard line to start its first possession, WP was flagged for holding in the end zone, a safety that gave Kean a 2-0 edge 2:32 into the contest.
The Cougars returned the ensuing free kick 55 yards, setting up their next drive at the Pioneer-31. Seven plays later, senior Marcin Zadlo kicked a 32-yard field goal for a 5-0 advantage at the 8:15 mark.
A 33-yard completion by senior Rylan Pangborn to junior David Patterson, Jr., and a two-point conversion pass caught by freshman GioVanni Shine, pushed Kean ahead by a 13-0 count 3:56 before halftime.
Zadlo finished the scoring with a 26-yard field goal less than 10 minutes before the game's final whistle.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Junior quarterback Tracy Fudge, Jr. (Woodbridge, N.J./Woodbridge) was 10-for-21 for 99 yards and an interception. Classmate Cornelius Kinchen (Paterson, N.J./John F. Kennedy) finished 2-for-9 for 39 yards.
Freshman running back Kobe Roberts (Somers Point, N.J./Mainland Regional) picked up 34 yards on 10 attempts, and junior wide receiver RaeQuawn Bridgeman (West Orange, N.J./Orange) caught two passes for 51 yards.
Junior linebacker Corey Anthony (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) made a season-best 15 tackles, while senior linebacker Charles Faulkner (Carteret, N.J./Carteret) pulled down 13 ball carriers. Senior linebacker Jonathan Jackson (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) notched a new career high with 11 tackles, including 3.0 for a loss.
Pangborn went 10-for-19 for 89 yards and a score for Kean. Shine carried 17 times for 63 yards, and Patterson picked up 55 yards and a score off five receptions.
Junior defensive lineman Jemel Daniels paced the Cougars with seven tackles and a fumble recovery.
