Columbia Tops Lafayette 3-0 to Cap Off Non-Conference Play
NEW YORK — The Columbia women's soccer team wrapped up its non-conference slate with a 3-0 shutout victory over Lafayette on a misty Monday evening inside Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium. With the win, Columbia moves to 6-5-1 overall on the season while Lafayette falls to 4-9-0. "I think coming off of the road game against Penn, playing a tough team, we really wanted to get out and sort of re-establish the rhythm and the style that we wanted to play," said Columbia head coach Tracey Bartholomew. "It was just a total team effort right from the whistle, which is what we talked about: responding and showing the true character of who we are." The Lions were quick to strike, recording two of their three goals within the first 15 minutes of action. Junior midfielder Maddie Temares gave Columbia a 1-0 edge in just the sixth minute of play as she slotted a shot from the top of the box into the top right corner. Off of Jessica Schildkraut's corner kick in the 13th minute, senior forward Emma Anderson knocked one in off the scramble to double Columbia's lead. Temares' goal marked her second of the season, while Anderson tallied her third of the 2018 campaign. After carrying a 2-0 lead into halftime, Columbia still had more in the tank. The Lions padded the score in the 70th minute as senior Amaris Hemmings sent a cross from the far side to find first year Mallaika Tomar who tapped it in from the 6' for her second score of the year. Hemmings recorded her second assist of the season. Senior goalkeeper Sophie Whitehouse recorded her sixth win of the season, as she combined with fellow senior Marie Matthewsand junior Nicole Cerulli for a clean sheet. Cerulli had her first career save in the match on Lafayette's only shot on goal in the 90th minute. Columbia resumes Ivy League play on Sunday, Oct. 14, bringing in Princeton at 3 p.m. The match will be nationally televised on ESPNU.
