Playing a fourth-straight game on the road, the University at Albany concluded its season-long road trip at American University Tuesday afternoon.
The Great Danes got going early, with freshman midfielder Hafliði Sigurðarson breaking through in the 13th minute with a setup from Kaio DaSilva and Daniel Krutzen to put UAlbany up 1-0. It was the Danes’ first goal since September 21.
American responded quickly, tying the game at one in the 17th minute. Four minutes of game time later, the Eagles drew a penalty kick and successfully converted the attempt to go up 2-1 in the 21st.
In the 37th minute, with UAlbany still trailing by one, freshman forward Hugo Guerra, who had subbed in in the 27th minute, found the back of the net on a breakaway to bring the Danes even at two. It was his first career goal at UAlbany.
Following the halftime break, UAlbany drew a penalty kick in the American box in the 51st minute. Senior forward Nico Solabarrieta, who did not play in the first half, failed his attempt to give UAlbany the lead when American goalkeeper John Mino made the save.
Solabarrieta more than made up for the failed attempt, however, netting goals in the 65th and 66th minutes. The first game in a breakaway set up by Krutzen and Sam Philip, and the second was off a cross in transition from Carlos Clark.
Solabarrieta’s individual onslaught continued in the 70th minute when he received a through-ball from Krutzen off a throw in and found himself just past the American defensive line. He pushed his shot far post, and though Mino got a hand on it, the ball slipped past his hand, bounced off the far post and rolled over the line.
Solabarrieta capped off his performance with one final goal in the 72nd minute, again, from Krutzen. His four goals and eight points each mark a single-game program record, surpassing Shaun Kane’s three-goal, six-point performance in 2008 against Siena. Solabarrieta and Kane are the only Great Danes to record three or more goals in a single game since at least the 2003 season.
Krutzen’s four assists are also a single-game program record, surpassing the previous record of two held by Krutzen and a dozen others.
The six goals are the most the Great Danes have scored in a single game under head coach Trevor Gorman. The 19 points total (six goals and seven assists) represent the highest total in a single game in program history, surpassing the 16 points scored against Marist in the 2008 season.
