Eight From Men's Tennis Vie For ITA Regional Titles


PRINCETON, N.J. — The men's tennis team will send eight competitors to the ITA Northeast Regional Championships, which start with the qualifying rounds Thursday. Cornell, which has been represented in the singles final in each of the last two years, will have Evan Bynoe, Jake Hansen, Lev Kazakov, Joseph McAllister, Pietro Rimondini, Daniel Soyfer, Eero Vasa and David Volfson in action. Hansen and Rimondini, Kazakov and McAllister, and Soyfer and Volfson have also been placed in the doubles main draw. McAllister and Rimondini will start up Thursday as two of the 64 singles entries attempting to earn one of 16 qualifying spots in the main draw. McAllister not only rolled through his qualifying matches last year, he won three tilts in the main draw to advance into the Round of 16. The first round of singles and doubles is then set to start Friday, with the highest seeds not in action until Saturday. In singles, Volfson is in tier of seeds 5-8, followed by Kazakov (9-16), Soyfer (9-16) and Vasa (17-32). In doubles, Soyfer and Volfson (5-8), and Kazakov and McAllister (9-16) are seeded. Volfson advanced to the singles finals both last year and as a freshman in 2015. Chris Vrabel'17 won a regional title without dropping a single set in 2016. Cornell's last regional doubles title came in 2013 via Vrabel and Sam Fleck '15. The Northeast region includes Army West Point, Binghamton, Boston College, Brown, Bryant, Buffalo, Colgate, Columbia, Connecticut, Cornell, Dartmouth, Delaware, Drexel, Fairfield, Fairleigh Dickinson, Fordham, Harvard, Hofstra, La Salle, Lehigh, Marist, Monmouth, Niagara, NJIT, Penn, Princeton, Quinnipiac, Sacred Heart, St. Bonaventure, St. John's, Wagner and Yale. Princeton's Lenz Tennis Center is the primary venue for the tournament, though if inclement weather dictates indoor play then Jadwin Gymnasium, Eve Kraft Community Tennis Center, Mercer County Tennis Center (West Windsor) and Hopewell Tennis and Swim Center (Pennington) will all be used.
